[Feb, 2026 Update]: TL;DR It's from a TV show. The company has pivoted from a holdco to an AI service provider.

In my experience, it’s far too easy to agonize over naming a product, service or company. Does this sound familiar?
Gather the team together and spend a week in meetings. Together you brainstorm hundreds of names from every aspect of language you can think of from Latin root words and ancient texts... Then you look up trademarks and domain availability to find (again) that everything is taken and you're back to square one.
So, where did “Graystone” come from and why is it misspelled? It’s actually a bit of a silly story that has nothing to do with business at all. Let me explain...
One of the greatest shows of all time (in my opinion) is Battlestar Galactica. Not the original campy version from the 1970s but the reimagined version by Ronald D. Moore that ran from 2003 – 2010.
After the run of this series, there was a short lived prequel called Caprica. Part of this show covers the origin of the Cylons, who are the main antagonists of the human race within BSG.
No spoilers, but the original inventor of the Cylons from Caprica was Daniel Graystone of Graystone Industries.
Daniel Graystone was a standout character on an otherwise dud of a show. In any case, he invented the technology which became the catalyst for the entire BSG story.
The name sounded cool... so that's the name of the company.
